The skeletal system is composed of bones and connective tissues providing body support and shape. It serves several functions, such as protecting organs, enabling movement, and storing minerals. The human skeleton consists of 206 bones connected by ligaments and joints. These bones are categorized into the axial skeleton (skull, spine, rib cage) and the appendicular skeleton (arms, legs, pelvic girdle). Bones are living tissues constantly undergoing remodeling, which allows them to adapt to stress and changes. The skeletal system also includes cartilage, tendons, and ligaments. Cartilage cushions joints and absorbs shock, tendons connect muscles to bones, and ligaments connect bones to each other. Additionally, certain bones produce blood cells through bone marrow.
